Katarina Witt started skating when she was five. She was only five when her abilities became apparent and then in Karl-Marx-Stadt she entered an institution specifically designed for children with athletic abilities. Her coach Jutta was also there. Witt was second place at the World Championships of Copenhagen in 1982. This marked her debut. Her elegance and grace caught everyone's attention at that time, and from then ahead she became the dominant figure skater in the sport. Olympic triumph at Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the women's silver medal for figure skating in a close-fought competition. The following year she was able to win another contest that was even more competitive. Her free skate was an unbeatable loss. However, the gold medal was awarded to her because of the performance she put in both the compulsory figures (short programme) and mandatory figures. Witt was the first female to be crowned champion in male and female figure skating ever since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt was capable of returning to figure skating following her successes as a film actor. She competed in Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. Though she failed to win a single medal, she enchanted fans despite her seventh place finish. Witt received her induction to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
